Spaghetti and meatballs as we know and love them today are a product of Italian American cuisine. The idea of meatballs was brought to America by Italian immigrants, who changed the recipe to fit their budgets. Between 1880 and 1920, when millions of Italians emigrated to America in quest of freedom and land, this meal was likely created by those immigrants. When they learned that meat in America was reasonably priced, they became interested in diets high in meat. They used inexpensive ground beef to make meatballs, indulging in greater servings than they had at home. They added a big portion of pasta and covered it with a sauce made from canned tomatoes to further fill out their meals. The cost of these ingredients—canned tomatoes and dried pasta—was low, and they were simple to prepare. Spaghetti and meatballs came into being as a result of creativity and resourcefulness!
